Now on to the review.
Friday I was lucky enough to be one of the first regular (not some film critic) to see the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief. We took our students on a field trip to the movie and actually got an early private show starting about 10:00 am.
Most of my students had read the book and we were all very excited about the film adaptation.
I suspect that many book purists will not be happy with this movie. They will claim that too much of the book was cut out and that Percy, Annabeth and Grover were too old. I have to say that I can see that and do agree. I was surprised to see that Annabeth's Yankee hat, Ares and even Clarisse were all absent from the film.
A few of my students really had a hard time on the bus ride back to school. Many could not separate the movie from the book and were mad about the glaring cuts. We had some interesting discussions and most of the kids said they would have rather had a much longer movie, keeping all of the book in tact, than the movie they saw.
But with all of that criticism flying around, I very much enjoyed this movie. I understand that screenwriters have to find a way to take a full novel and trim it down to a story that can be told on film in about two hours.
The action was well done and exciting and Grover's one-liners are really funny. In fact the story as a whole is a great blend of action and comedy.
I will be interested to hear what the lads at SMS Guys Read think about this movie, and I am always interested to hear what other are thinking, so hit that comment button and let us know what your thoughts about Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief are.
Have you seen the movie? What did you think? Will you see the movie? Why or why not.
As always Keep on Reading,
