Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief Review

Hello Readers,

First of all a little house keeping… our next SMS Guys Read meeting will be next Tuesday at all the same times and places.

Now on to the review.

Friday I was lucky enough to be one of the first regular (not some film critic) to see the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief.  We took our students on a field trip to the movie and actually got an early private show starting about 10:00 am.

Most of my students had read the book and we were all very excited about the film adaptation.

I suspect that many book purists will not be happy with this movie.  They will claim that too much of the book was cut out and that Percy, Annabeth and Grover were too old.  I have to say that I can see that and do agree.  I was surprised to see that Annabeth's Yankee hat, Ares and even Clarisse were all absent from the film.

A few of my students really had a hard time on the bus ride back to school.   Many could not separate the movie from the book and were mad about the glaring cuts.  We had some interesting discussions and most of the kids said they would have rather had a much longer movie, keeping all of the book in tact, than the movie they saw.

But with all of that criticism flying around, I very much enjoyed this movie.  I understand that screenwriters have to find a way to take a full novel and trim it down to a story that can be told on film in about two hours.

The action was well done and exciting and Grover's one-liners are really funny.  In fact the story as a whole is a great blend of action and comedy.

I will be interested to hear what the lads at SMS Guys Read think about this movie, and I am always interested to hear what other are thinking, so hit that comment button and let us know what your thoughts about Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief are.

Have you seen the movie?  What did you think? Will you see the movie? Why or why not.

As always Keep on Reading,

Mr. H

  1. After doing a Camp Half-Blood program at my library last weekend, my coworker and I saw the movie on Saturday. She felt much the same way that your students did, but I thought it was fair as far as movie versions of books go.
One thing we both agreed on was that we didn’t like Mr. D not being in the movie at all!
Overall, decent movie but not nearly as awesome as the books.

  2. I saw this movie, and I loved it!! I really liked Grover’s lines because they were really funny. But I was a little disappointed that Clarisse, Ares, and the “Tunnel of Love” ride weren’t included. My favorite scene was when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were inside the Lotus Casino. PERCY JACKSON ROCKS!!!!

  3. Hey Jedi Master Zach,
I can’t believe I forgot about Mr. D! What an important, and silly, part of the book that was completely absent from the film.
    thanks for the comment.

  4. i thought the movie was awesome i agree with ginne grover was so funny. And about no clarisse ares and no tunnel of love. but i was still very good but i thought the buts part was when they where in the underworld. i cant belived they they didnt put in ares fight percy and give the furies the helm of darkness. And no annbrths invisibility cap

  5. I, personally did not like the movie too much. I think that they completley butchered it. I thought it was funny and very ironic to have a supermodel play as Medusa. Very funny to have a severed head of a supermodel for the most of the movie. It caused some disturbances too. The Hydra in the movie was also pretty cool. The Lotus Casino also made me want to go and stay there.

  6. Sean said two things I totally agree with…one I love that a model played Medusa and that her severed head played more of a role that she did, two that I want to go to the Lotus Casino and stay for a few years.

  7. I loved The Lightning Thief! I especially loved the parts where Grover kept flirting with the girls. Oh, and don’t forget the part with him freaking out abou Medusa’s head in the toilet and the lady screaming wildly. The Hydra at the Pantheon and the Minotaur near Camp Half-Blood were scary and awesome at the same time. The Lightning Thief is Number One!

  8. I have to agree with a lot of what everyone’s said. I liked the movie as a movie but would rather they left in my favorite stuff. Like Ares. And Mr. D. I still say Hulk Hogan should be Ares and Danny Devito should be Dionysis if they do any more PJ movies. Take a look at our reviews on the Boys Rule Boys Read blog (Feb. 23). And I envy your getting to see Peter Lerangis!! I loved The Viper’s Nest!

  9. I have a two part answer.
First of all, story wise in relation to the book. I was sad to see how they left out a lot of the good parts, but it was the bare essential that they needed.
Second of all, the movie was amazing. The special effects were amazing, and the acting was masterful. The minotaur and hydra were my favorite by far, and this movie left me not at all bored.

  10. the movie was awsome but they did leave a lot of stuff from the book out like mr.D, Ares, the tunnel of love, Clarrise, and annabeths Yankees hat. the movie was still awsome though.
