Hugo Movie Field Trip

Hello Readers,

So next Wednesday we will meet up at our local movie establishment for the much anticipated showing of Hugo, based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

I can’t tell you times yet, they told me they would be posted yesterday but they lied, it will be sometime on Thursday afternoon.  So check the announcements at school for the official times later this week.

I have been reading, in fact am finished with a great little book called The Hugo Movie Companion.  The book is also written by Brian Selznick and tells the story of how the book came to be and then how the book became the movie.

It is full of great little real life details and wonderful full color images from the movie.  It also tells lots of stories from major players in the making of the movie.  You almost feel like you know how a movie is truly made after finishing the book.

One of my favorite thoughts from the book was dealing with the plan to film the movie in 3-D.

The book talks about how in 1931 there was a new movie technology that was seen with lots of suspicion… sound!  Can you imagine a time where the vast majority of people looked at the idea of sound in a movie as a gimmick that took away from the film?

The book and movie makers claim we are in another technology shift today.  Much of the movie going world looks at 3-D as a gimmick that takes away from the film, or even makes it cheesy.  I would put myself in that spot, I have only really seen 3-D movies in IMAX or Disney settings and think of them as gimmicky.  I also fall into the camp of not wanting to pay the extra dollars just to see the film in three dimensions.

So I am interested to see and hear if the Guys Read field trip to the Hugo movie should be a 2-D or 3-D adventure.

Here is a poll to light our way…

Should SMS Guys Read see the Hugo film in 2-D or 3-D?
So vote for the dimension you most want to experience this film in and let us know in comments why.

Read On, Mr. H

  1. Im going to vote 3D , unless someone convices me not too. I like 3D beacuse it pops out at you and gives you a clearer version and meaning of the movie.

  2. I think that we should definitely watch the 3D version of the movie. If the movie was just made as 2D, then turned into 3D, I might have mixed feelings. Since the movie was made for 3D, I think we should see it that way.

  3. I vote 3d because Mr.H specifically said the director put in an extra effort to make it cool in 3d. If they made it better, go see the better one!

  4. Well, as i know all of you are going to vote for 3D because you think it is “cooler” or “more awesome” and i cant really control your decsions/opinions, i think that we should see it in 2d. Although we are going to see it in 3d i am going to consider seeing it in 2d on my own time. Oh well, i think it is going to be an average movie and no more. Considering i have not read the book, and dont really plan on it, i dont really have a very optimistic feeling about it.

  5. I’m sorry I was not present at today’s meeting. I was wondering if I missed any type of permission slip for the movie. I took the pole and chose 2d by the way.

  6. TMC Guys Read is going to see it on Dec. 2–Thanksgiving week is too crazy for most of us.

Personally, I don’t like 3D. It makes my head hurt. But I expect the guys will want 3D, so I’ll just have to deal with it…
