Dragon Run… The Game

Hello Readers,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASo most of us have finished the great new novel Dragon Run by Patrick Matthews, I actually saw the hard back copy in a Barnes and Noble this week.  When researching the book and author a few weeks ago we came upon the fact that Patrick Matthews actually designs games as well as write cool books.  Now when we first read game designer, it is sad to say that we all instantly thought of the world of video game design.  Mr. Matthews actually designs tabletop games, what I used to call board games.  I guess board games sounds too much like “bored” games now a days so we go with table top.

Now it the spirit of SMS Guys Read and crazy challenges, and inspired by Patrick Matthews and his game design job we have decided to attempt to create a table top game based on the novel Dragon Run.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOur goal is to create a game that plays like a strategy game, not a Candy Land game through the world of Dragon Run.

After two meetings to talk about this grand idea we have what I thought would be called a Beta version, but my picky GR members insisted that I call it an Alpha version, as it has not had testers working with it.  This version is now close to completion.  We still need tons of card ideas and we are struggling with how the game ends.

I have been surprised how exciting the process has been.  We struggle through all kinds of stumbling blocks, but manage to come up with some compromise and viable solution. For a group of 12 and 13-year-old boys finding compromise and working together is a big accomplishment. Usually our meeting spiral into internet meme recitals.

We hope to have a Beta version set for our next meeting on March 19 so we can put it through some real world tests.

Check back soon for some Dragon Run Game updates and as always feel free to hit that comment button and let us know what you are thinking.

Read On,

Mr. H
